about

'Zar Vekotsni' (Hebrew for strange and thorny) is a sextet for soprano, 3 flutes, cello and percussion composed in 1980 to the text of Leah Goldberg. The last movement was composed first as its own work that titled 'Kayits' (Hebrew for summer). Only a year later, following several performances of Kayits and its recording by the Israeli Radio Authority, was the work reconceived into its present version. The original 'Kayits' became the last movement, and the first three movements of 'Zar Vekotsani' were composed as a prelude. This work exemplifies the composer's early investigation into sound and timbre. For example, the score specifies to the singer not only pitch and rhythm, but also introduces its own notation that specifies changes in timbre, articulation, and tone color. A similar attention to timbre is notated for the flutes, cello, and percussion.

The work is composed in four movements:

1. Strange and thorny
2. In transparent blue crystal glasses
3. See how it blends
4. Death (the original 'Kayits')
